International Welding Engineer(IWE) |
IWE is the highest level welding technology and quality supervision personnel in the standard of ISO14731 (equal to EN719).
1 Access Conditions
To hold a bachelor degree in engineering from a government approved university.
2 Training Contents
According to IIW-CANB-TC-001-1999, it includes:
Welding fundamentals
Practice and demonstration
Main courses:
Welding processes and equipment
Materials and their behaviour during welding
Construction and design
Fabrication and applications
The contents involve: ISO, EN, ASME and DIN standards and codes.
3 Examination and Diploma
According to IWE guidelines, candidates passing the examination can get IWE diplomas after training. |

IWE Alternative route (IWE-A) training |
International Institute of Welding has developed "Alternative Route" to promote international harmonized welding personnel qualification worldwide based on the recognition of previous study, knowledge and working experience of applicants; therefore, the candidates who meet the access conditions can get diplomas with less training time or enter for the final examination directly after CANB detailed assessment.
1 Access Conditions
1) Graduated from college of engineering, having a bachelor degree.
2) Having working experience of engineer related to welding not less than 4 years in recent 6 years.
CANB checks the application form contained the above information and verifies the access conditions.
2 Training Contents
Training contents of the whole courses contain four modules:
1) Welding processes and equipment
2) Materials and their behaviour during welding
3) Construction and design
4) Fabrication and applications
The training period is usually 3 weeks. The corresponding training period may be extended if there is special condition, such as the candidate fails any of the modules.
3 Examination and Diploma
According to IWE guidelines, candidates passing the examination can get IWE diplomas after training. |

The training and qualification in cooperation with colleges and universities |
CANB has formulated the training outline in cooperation with colleges according to the requirements of IIW guidelines for IWE. The students can be trained together on campus. Candidates passing the examination can get IWE diplomas.
1 Access Conditions
University degree or above, major in welding or related-welding graduated from engineering colleges.
2 Training Contents
According to IIW-CANB-TC-001-2001, the training includes:
1. Welding fundamentals (can be combined into university courses)
Practice and Demonstration
Main courses (the application of standards and specifications can be emphasized with the cases of welding fabrication)
Welding processes and equipment
Materials and their behaviour during welding
Construction and design
Fabrication and applications
The contents involve: the standards and specifications of ISO, EN, ASME, DIN and national standards.
3 Examination and Diplomas
Examination includes written and oral parts. A person who has passed the examination can be awarded IWE diploma. |

International Welding Technologist(IWT) |

Graduated from engineering college (2-3 years' study), with college diploma.

International Welding Specialist(IWS) |
According to ISO14731 (EN719), the function of IWS may contain: assist IWE to settle welding technology problem; in charge of welding production and process control; participate to establish welding process and organise welding manufacture; solve problems during welding fabrication. IWS plays an important role to enhance the competitive ability in international welding projects and improve quality of welding products and fabrication management level.
1 Access Conditions (One of the following conditions is feasible):
1) To hold a diploma from Technical secondary school or Vocational secondary school or equivalent or higher and be above 20 years old and have at least 2 years experience in relevant fields.
2)To hold an IWP or DVS Instructor diploma, be above 20 years old and have at least 2 years experience in relevant fields.
3) Having worked as a professional worker (with diploma after examination) in metalworking professions and minimum 3 years experience in welding related activities, and a minimum age of 22 years.
2 Training Contents
According to IIW-CANB-TC03-2000, the training includes:
Welding processes and equipment
Materials and their behaviour during welding
Construction and design
Fabrication and applications
The contents involve: the standards and specifications of ISO, EN, ASME, DIN and national standards.
3 Examination and Diplomas
According to IWS guideline, candidates passing the examination can be awarded IWS diplomas after training. |

International Welding Practitioner(IWP) |
It is designed to be a basic core education in welding technology to support a range of job functions; e.g. welding inspectors, welding supervisors, welding foreman, welding instructors and welding technical sales personnel. International Welding Practitioner may also be a relevant qualification for people whose job is to assist responsible Welding Co-ordinators in manufacturing companies.
1 Access Conditions (One of the following conditions is feasible):
1) Hold a valid welder approval certificate ISO 9606 H-L045 ss nb in one of the welding processes listed in 5.1 of ISO 9606, or equivalent, e.g. EN 287 H-L045 ss nb, or ASME IX 6G . Or hold a valid welder approval as a plate welder for the following conditions PE ss nb or PC and PF ss nb, according to ISO 9606 at least in one process, and/or other national equivalent in the IIW member country.
Be a minimum age of 20 years including 2 years experience as a welder.
3) Students who have successfully passed the intermediate examination of Part I of the IWP course are allowed to attend Part II of the IWP course.
2 Training Contents
According to IWP of IIW, the training includes:
Practical training: total 60 hours
Theoretical education: total 86 hours
Welding processes and equipment
Materials and their behaviour during welding
Construction and design
Fabrication and applications
3 Examination and Diplomas
According to IWP guidelines, candidates passing the examination can be awarded IWP diplomas after training. |

International Welding Inspection Personnel(IWIP) |
It is designed to provide the core education in welding and inspection technology required by those responsible for performing inspection tasks at various levels.
1 Access Conditions
IWIP has three levels: C, S and B level. The access conditions are corresponding to IWT , IWS and IWP respectively.

According to IWIP of IIW, the training includes:
1. Welding processes and equipment
2. Materials and their behaviour during welding
3. Construction and design
4. Fabrication and applications
5. Welding inspection:

3 Examination and Diplomas

According to welding processes, welders can be divided into four groups: gas welder, MMA welder, TIG welder and MIG/MAG Welder. It comprises of three levels of education and training: Fillet, Plate and Pipe welder.
1 Access Conditions
Hold a diploma of Junior middle school, good health, with the ability of welding independently.
2 Training Contents
The principal content is practical training assisted by theoretical education. The total is 244 hours, in which practice and examination is 204 hours .
The theoretical education part includes: metal material, electricity knowledge and thermal cutting; special knowledge includes welding consumables, equipment, processes, welding stress and distortion etc.
3 Examination and Diplomas
According to IW guideline and ISO9606/EN287 standard, candidates passing the examination can be awarded IW diplomas and ISO9606 certificate (optional) after training. |
